Honorable Mention Essence Answered Gary Blankenship The rhododendron shreds to confetti, its beauty largely unnoticed and nearly unrecorded as we travel beyond iris and spring mint Our mind on minor travails, the pleasure of friends and children, our attention span diverted from scenes we’ve seen every day Or perhaps I’ve lost the connection and no longer hear the crow’s congress, moth’s mantra, spider’s plea to listen to pollen and windborne seed Peonies will still open in June, Spanish Flags bloom beyond the river, I still imagine the ring-neck’s cries beyond sidewalks and traffic lights Beneath the rhododendron, the ground is carpeted pink-brown, the beauty’s offering nearly forgotten as the thread unravels unattended
